GENEVA, N.Y. – Looking for a simple, refreshing way to kick off the New Year? First Day Hikes are a great excuse to get outside on January 1, 2026 and start the year with fresh air, movement, and a little perspective.
First Day Hikes are happening all across New York State, hosted by parks, trail groups, community organizations, and public land managers. Whether you’re up for a longer winter hike or just want an easy walk to stretch your legs after the holidays, there are options for all ages and experience levels.
Many hikes are family-friendly, welcome leashed pets, and take place at scenic locations—from forests and shoreline trails to historic sites and canal paths. As always, winter conditions can vary, so it’s a good idea to dress for the weather and check event details ahead of time.
However you choose to celebrate, First Day Hikes are a great reminder that getting outside—even in winter—can be one of the best ways to reset and start the year on a positive note.
