What does the buoy measure?
The buoy collects water temperature and other water-quality data at multiple depths, along with meteorological conditions such as air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction. Measurements are collected regularly throughout the day, providing a look at conditions both at the surface and below it.
Why does this matter?
Seneca Lake changes considerably below the surface. Temperature patterns can help show when the lake is stratified, when layers of water are mixing, and how conditions change throughout the season. These changes can influence many aspects of the lake’s ecology and water quality.
