The Mystery of the Seneca Drums with Jed P. Sparks
Jed P. Sparks, professor in Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, explores one of the Finger Lakes’ most enduring mysteries. Drawing on scientific research, local history, and folklore, Jed will dive into the unexplained booming sounds that have echoed around Seneca Lake for generations and what scientists are learning about them today.

Understanding Harmful Algal Blooms with Mark Petzold
Since joining the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Board in 2022, Mark Petzold has led the organization’s expanding water quality initiatives. In this Deep Dive Webinar, he explores the connection between phosphorus and harmful algal blooms (HABs), the work being done to reduce phosphorus entering Seneca Lake, and why these efforts are critical to protecting water quality.

Hydrogeology and Lake Level with Bill Kappel
Bill Kappel spent more than 30 years as a hydrogeologist with the US Geological Survey before retiring in 2014. He provides a general overview of how Seneca Lake fits into the regional flow system and address questions on the management of Finger Lake water levels and river-flow management throughout the Oswego River Basin.
